Umpire Information

Each club is required to provide umpires for Net Set Go, Juniors, Intermediate and Senior competition games every Saturday. The Illawarra Netball Association has three umpire classifications;

  • Junior Umpires: 13 years of age, or older, by the 31st December of the current year. Junior umpires will be required to complete both the Rules of Netball Theory Exam and the Foundation Umpire Course. New umpires will be provided with theory and on court training before the season starts and will not be allocated to umpire on a Saturday until deemed ready by the Club’s Umpire Convener.
  • Senior Umpires: 15 years of age and have the necessary experience to be able to umpire higher graded games and Net Set Go games. Senior umpires should have already completed both the foundation course and Rules of Theory Exam.
  • Duty Umpire – All club senior teams must supply 2 x umpires to fulfill Umpiring Duty on a Saturday at the opposite time slot to their game. Duty umpires need to have completed The Rules of Netball Theory Exam.

All umpires will be required to complete The Rules of Netball Theory Exam which tests the basic rules of the game.

The Rules of Netball Theory examination is an online examination through MyNetball that is accessible all year. A certificate is generated for all candidates who achieve a pass (70% or above). The most recent examination mark is the current result and pass marks are valid for 4 years.

More information on The Rules of Netball Theory examination and other umpiring course can be found in the link below.

Important Umpiring Information

Approaching an Umpire
A coach, manager or parent are not allowed to approach the umpires to seek clarification of a rule. Only the captain has the right to approach the umpires during an interval for clarification of any rule. Any player/s for whom the clarification is relevant may accompany the captain. In the event that the captain is not on the court, an on-court captain will be appointed and they can approach the umpires.

If you wish to speak with someone about an umpire for any reason please approach the club convener in the first instance if it is a Berkeley Club umpire. If the umpire is from a different club please ask a coach/manager to approach the control room and discuss with a member of the Illawarra Umpire’s committee who will be able to give more information/attend the game.
